Fitting a Superflex Poly gearbox mount to a Saab 9000 Pre '93

To gain access to the gearbox mount on a Saab 9000 -93 you must first remove the wheel arch liner. This can be a little fiddly to remove and refit but is not too difficult with a little patience. Start by removing the 10mm nuts securing the wheel arch liner to the wing around the wheel arch. Then remove the self-tapping screws from the bottom and back of the wheel arch.

Once you have removed the wheel arch you should have a clear view of the gearbox mounting. Place a jack under the gearbox and take the weight off of the mount. Then undo the nut and withdraw the bolt from the centre of the rubber mount. Jack the gearbox up until the mount is clear of the chassis bracket.

Start by cutting out the centre of the existing rubber mount, this will enable you to get a hacksaw threaded through the mount. You can then cut through the metal ring of the mount. Take great care not to cut through the metal bush ring and damage the gearbox end plate itself. You should then be able to tap the mount out of the gearbox.

To fit the Superflex mount apply some of the lubricating grease to the inside of the gearbox end plate mount and the bushes. Push in both sides of the bush, using a flat-headed screwdriver to ease in the edges if necessary. Take care to line the flanges of the poly mounts with the recesses in the outer ring of the gearbox casting. Once you have both parts fitted insert the centre stainless steel ring into the polybush.

Lower the jack until the mount is in its proper position, insert the bolt, replace the nut and tighten. You can then remove the jack and refit the wheel arch liner.
